Presentation of Scilicet

On the unconscious in the 21st century

Vera Avellar Ribeiro and Simone Souto

Lacan used the word Scilicet for the first time in 1968, to name the Journal of the Freudian School of Paris. In Latin, this verbal expression comes from the contraction of scire (to know) + licet (to be allowed to), forming "to be allowed to know". The phrase that accompanied the journal’s title, "Thou mayst know what the École freudienne de Paris thinks about it”, registered Lacan’s desire to keep alive the transmission of psychoanalysis.

In 2005, at the 5th WAP Congress, Scilicet resurfaced in the form of a dictionary with entries grouped alphabetically, each of them written by a different member of the various Schools of the World Association of Psychoanalysis (WAP). Since then, at every WAP Congress, the desire inscribed in this message left by Lacan, is reaffirmed with the publication of a new Scilicet.

This transmitted knowledge, presented as a dictionary, does not pretend to be exhaustive or conclusive. It is a move to capture the moment, the singularity, the orientation and the actuality of the psychoanalysis we practice.

In our view, Scilicet is part of what Jacques-Alain Miller called "a continued effort to stay as close as possible to the experience, to say it without being crushed under the wall of language"[1], and thus, without clichés, to follow down the unprecedented path opened by Freud and Lacan.

Scilicet - The speaking body: on the unconscious on the 21st century is the sixth volume in the series, preceded by: Scilicet of The Names-of-the-Father, Scilicet - The Objects a in the psychoanalytic experience, Scilicet - Semblants and Sinthome, Scilicet- The Symbolic Order in the 21st Century, Scilicet - A Real for the 21st Century. The tables of contents of these volumes are available on this website.

The entries that compose the present volume use Jacques-Alain Miller's presentation "The Unconscious and the Speaking Body" [2] as their reference. Taken together, they constitute the mobilization of the AMP analytic community to "cross the wall of language" [3] and to give a place to an unconscious that, in the 21st century, appears less in its significance strand than in its real and libidinal dimension, in which the body, affected by the speech, is at the foreground.
